Our Story
The Pensacola Beacon launched in 2025 as the Gulf Coast's first Black culture digital magazine. Founded by Tonya Jackson — a lifelong Pensacolian — The Beacon exists because Black residents make up 28% of this city's population, yet no local publication was dedicated to telling their stories with the depth and dignity they deserve.
From the legendary Belmont-DeVilliers district where jazz giants performed on the Chitlin' Circuit, to the entrepreneurs building tomorrow's Black business district, to the students earning scholarships to study journalism — The Beacon documents what should never be forgotten and amplifies what deserves to be heard.
We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN pending). Every dollar we raise goes directly into publishing stories and funding scholarships for Black students pursuing media and journalism on the Gulf Coast.
