Gulf Coast Scholarships for Black Media Students
The Beacon Scholarship Fund invests in the next generation of Black storytellers. Here's who qualifies, how to apply, and why it matters.
The Beacon Scholarship Fund supports Black students pursuing careers in journalism and media on the Gulf Coast.

The future of Black storytelling on the Gulf Coast depends on the people who will tell those stories. Journalists, filmmakers, podcast producers, photographers, digital media creators. They need training, resources, and financial support. That is exactly what the Beacon Scholarship Fund provides.

Why Scholarships for Black Media Students

The numbers are stark. According to the Pew Research Center, Black journalists make up roughly 7 percent of the newsroom workforce in the United States, despite Black Americans comprising approximately 14 percent of the population. In the Gulf Coast region, the gap is even wider. Local newsrooms have shrunk dramatically over the past two decades, and the journalists who remain are overwhelmingly white.

This means that stories about Black communities are often told by people who don't live in them. Or they're not told at all.

The Beacon Scholarship Fund exists to close that gap, starting at the source. By investing in Black students who are pursuing careers in journalism and media, we are investing in a future where Black communities have their own storytellers, their own record keepers, their own voices in the public conversation.

What the Scholarship Covers

The Beacon Scholarship Fund awards full-tuition scholarships to students from the Pensacola area and the broader Gulf Coast region. Each scholarship covers:

Tuition at an accredited college or university in the state of Florida

Books and materials required for coursework

A mentorship connection with working media professionals in the Gulf Coast region

Scholarship recipients are also featured in The Pensacola Beacon, giving them an early publishing credit and a platform to share their work with the community.

Identity: Must be a Black or African American student

How to Apply

The application process is straightforward and designed to be accessible to all eligible students:

1. Personal Statement. Write a 500-word essay explaining your interest in media and storytelling, your connection to the Gulf Coast, and how you plan to use your education to serve Black communities. This is the most important part of your application. We want to hear your voice.

2. Portfolio or Work Samples. Submit examples of your work. This can include published articles, blog posts, photographs, videos, podcast episodes, social media content, school newspaper clippings, or any other media you have created. If you don't have a formal portfolio, a description of relevant projects or experiences is acceptable.

3. Academic Records. Provide your most recent transcript or proof of enrollment and acceptance.

4. Letter of Recommendation. One letter from a teacher, advisor, employer, or community leader who can speak to your character and potential.

Applications for the 2027 scholarship cycle will open in January 2027. Details and submission instructions will be published on The Pensacola Beacon website and promoted through our newsletter and social media channels.

The 2026 Recipients

In our inaugural year, the Beacon Scholarship Fund awarded scholarships to three outstanding students:
