If you have been waiting for the right moment to apply for a scholarship that understands exactly who you are and what you are trying to do — this is it. The Pensacola Beacon Media Scholarship is open, and applications close on June 15, 2026. That gives eligible students twenty-two days to submit.

The scholarship awards $2,000 to $2,500 annually to Black high school and college students in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties who are pursuing journalism, communications, digital media, or related fields. It is funded by reader donations and goes directly to students — no strings, no waiting.

If you are a Black student in the Pensacola area who is serious about a career in media, this scholarship was built with you in mind. The Beacon Scholarship is specifically for students who are committed to the craft of storytelling and who understand that representation in journalism matters — not as an abstract idea, but as something they live and breathe.

Eligibility requirements:

Black high school senior or currently enrolled college student

Resident of Escambia or Santa Rosa County, Florida

Pursuing journalism, communications, digital media, film, or a related field

GPA of 2.5 or higher, or demonstrable portfolio of media work

The application requires a short essay on your vision for community storytelling, a letter of recommendation from a teacher or community leader, your most recent transcript, and a sample of your work — a published piece, a portfolio link, a documentary reel, anything that shows the quality of your voice.

What the Scholarship Covers

Each recipient receives a financial award of $2,000 to $2,500, applied directly to tuition, textbooks, equipment, or any educational expense. Beyond the funding, scholars receive something that sets this program apart: a mentored byline in The Pensacola Beacon. You will write a real story, for a real publication, under the guidance of working journalists who have covered this city for years.

The mentored byline is not a formality. The Beacon editorial team works with each scholar through the reporting and writing process — from pitch to publication — ensuring that the piece that carries your name is something you are proud of. That byline goes on your college application, your LinkedIn profile, your resume. It is the beginning of a professional portfolio.

Why the Deadline Matters

Twenty-two days sounds like enough time. It is — but only if you start now. Applications submitted after June 15, 2026 at 11:59 PM Central will not be considered. The committee does not make exceptions for late submissions, no matter how strong the application.

There will be another application cycle next year. But this year, this scholarship, with your name on it — that window closes on June 15.

The Stakes Are Real

Black journalists represent roughly 7% of newsroom staff in the United States. That number has barely moved in twenty years. The reason is not a lack of talent — it is the absence of a pipeline. Young people who have the ability and the vision do not always have the financial support to complete their degrees, purchase the equipment they need, or attend the conferences where careers are made.

The Pensacola Beacon was built on the conviction that the communities closest to these stories should be the ones telling them. This scholarship is one of the most direct expressions of that conviction. It takes real dollars and puts them into the hands of students who are going to use them to become the journalists this city and this region need.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted through The Pensacola Beacon. Visit the scholarships page for the full eligibility requirements, application instructions, and a direct submission link. The process takes under an hour if you have your materials ready.

Scholarship recipients will be notified by July 1, 2026. Awards are disbursed directly to students upon confirmation of enrollment.

If you know a student who should apply — a niece, a neighbor, a student you taught, a young person who has been writing since middle school — please share this with them. The scholarship exists precisely for the people who have been waiting for something like this to exist.

Applications close June 15, 2026. Apply now.
